Summer Camp Horror
Movie of the Week
Dear Friends,
Our movie of the week is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, written & directed by Jane Schoenbrun and starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson. This movie had me when I first heard the title. Also, I’d heard good things about Schoenbrun’s prior feature I Saw the TV Glow. As usual I’ve not seen the trailer or read any plotlines or reviews.
The Angelika Film Center is dedicating two screens to the film all next week in expectation of a popular run, and based on the pre-sales for the 35mm screening we’re attending next Tuesday night, they may be right.
A housekeeping note: moving forward, each Thursday evening I’ll choose a movie, usually one opening that weekend, and post an accompanying brief note. I plan to continue my focus on women-directed films. When I have a longer essay about film or culture or my own work, I’ll share those on other days. As always, thanks for reading, keep supporting your local film culture, and do what you can for all people and our beautiful planet.
To the pleasure of films and the discussions they spark,
Josh
